Northern Powergrid, the company responsible for the region’s electricity distribution network, is showcasing its focus on innovation with the launch of a new section on its website.
The easily-accessible innovation webpage will share how Northern Powergrid tackles new technological and commercial issues facing the energy sector and the ways the electricity distributor is modernising and creating a smarter network for its 8 million customers.
Visitors to the webpage will find latest news, information and progress updates on live innovation projects as well as an insight into Northern Powergrid’s strategy and how to engage with the company responsible for keeping the lights on for 3.9 million homes and businesses across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.
For the first time, the electricity distributor is also outlining how it is shaping the electricity sector’s transition to a Distribution System Operation – a vision where energy networks move from their traditional role of delivering electricity from centralised power plants to one where they act as a platform and enabler for a whole range of new smart energy technologies, for the benefit of the customer.
Chris Goodhand, Northern Powergrid’s Innovation Manager, said: “Energy networks are taking a key role in the changing world of energy, and at Northern Powergrid, we’re fully embracing this.
“Our responsibility is to provide the smart and robust electrical infrastructure required for the UK to meet its carbon reduction and air quality targets. Heat pumps, solar panels, electric vehicles, and renewable generation of electricity, have become popular with our customers placing increased and new demands on our network. We’re ready to meet these challenges whilst ensuring we continue to provide a safe, reliable network that delivers more for our customers.”
In 2016, Northern Powergrid spent nearly £1.4 million on innovation. It is currently running 16 projects that align with its five strategic areas: deploying smart grid, maximising the value of smart meters, developing digital services, addressing issues of affordability and health and safety.
