Northern Powergrid is set to create a new generation of engineers to light up the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire and deliver future investments and innovations to improve the region’s power network.

The company, which is responsible for the network that keeps the lights on for 8 million customers across 3.9 million homes and businesses, is looking for up to 30 people who want to energise their career by joining its 2018 Graduate and Technical Staff Trainee Engineer Programme and Trainee Engineer (Foundation Degree) Programme.

The opportunities are part of the company’s on-going commitment to attracting and retaining a skilled, diverse workforce to help deliver its £3 billion, eight year (2015-23) investment programme, and contribute to the region’s growth as part of the Northern Powerhouse. They also demonstrate Northern Powergrid’s commitment to supporting the national ‘Energy and Utilities Workforce Renewal and Skills Strategy’ to encourage more people to consider a career in the energy industry.

The Trainee Engineer (Foundation Degree) Programme is a three-year tailored programme which includes a Northern Powergrid-funded Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering. In addition, trainee engineers will gain a broad range of experience through placements across Northern Powergrid’s business as well as completing formal personal and professional development.

The Graduate and Technical Staff Trainee Engineer Programme is a two-year programme which offers those with a degree in engineering, or an HNC/HND or equivalent in electrical engineering backed up with an industry based background, and personal and professional development to help progress their career. Trainees learn all about the engineering activities in an electricity network company, from operations to design and asset management, before completing an extended placement in their chosen specialism. The programme ensures that they are fully trained to take up a suitable role within Northern Powergrid on completion of their programme.

Becky Robson, Northern Powergrid’s Head of People, said: “The energy industry is an exciting place to be as we innovate in smart technology and work towards creating a low-carbon energy network that delivers more for our customers.  This makes it an excellent time to consider a career in our business.

“We’re looking to create a diverse new generation of brilliant, agile engineers who can energise their career, strengthen our workforce and help us deliver our £3 billion programme of investments and improvements for our customers now and in the future.”
