Northern Powergrid supports local communities across Yorkshire and the North East

Northern Powergrid sponsors a number of initiatives that support communities across Yorkshire and the North East. Here you can read about a few examples.

Get switched on to athletics

Northern Powergrid has partnered with Sportsmatch and England Athletics to create a unique scheme that aims to raise the standards of young athletes and coaches across Yorkshire and Humberside.

The aim of the ‘get switched on to athletics’ programme is to support athletes reaching their ultimate goal - to represent GB and England, and be a medalist on the podium at major championships focusing on the Olympics in London in 2012 and beyond.

Northern Powergrid wants to ensure that athletics remains the nation’s favourite Olympic sport. By building the regional capacity of the sport and inspiring the next generation of coaches, the programme investment will be vital to developing more top athletes.

Paid charity work

Northern Powergrid’s ‘global days of service’ programme provides funds to match employee hours volunteered at non-profit organisations in the communities where staff live, work and serve. Some examples include:

  • Northern Powergrid design engineer, Paul Nicholson, holds the positions of senior helmsman and press officer at Sunderland lifeboats. This voluntary service plays a vital role in saving lives in waterways and coastal areas in North East England. Since joining the Sunderland lifeboats in 1997, Paul has raised around £6,000 through the global days of service programme.
  • Tim Darley, Production Manager for Northern Powergrid, took up the position of team co-ordinator for Bingley Junior girl’s football team, after his daughter joined the club in 2005. Tim has dedicated 1290 hours of his free time to the club and, in the last year alone, he raised over £1,500 through the global days of service programme. This has helped to fund new soccer kits, better training facilities; coaching training courses and new equipment, such as goal nets and balls.
