Small scale generation for your property

...

Connection in a single property connected at low voltage (230 Volts single phase or 400 volts three phase) of a single generating unit of up to 16 amps per phase (3.68kW for a single phase installation, 11.04 kW for a three phase installation).  You may have seen this referred to as G83/1-1 Stage 1.

In general, you will need our consent to connect generating equipment to our network. However, in the case of generating equipment rated at no more than 16 Amps per phase, consent is not needed, provided:

  • You are only connecting a single generating plant; and
  • The generating plant and the installation complies with the requirements of Engineering Recommendation G83/1. These are recommendations for the connection of small-scale embedded generators, up to 16 Amps per phase in parallel with a public low voltage distribution network. Amongst other things, Engineering Recommendation G83/1 requires that:
    • The equipment has protection which will disconnect from the mains supply automatically in the event of the loss of mains supply;
    • The installation complies with the current edition of BS 7671 (Requirements for Electrical Installations); and
    • Your installer notifies us before or at the time of commissioning the microgenerator in line with the requirements of the Engineering Recommendation G83/1.

For each connection, an Installation Commissioning Confirmation form must be completed and submitted to us. You will also need to send us the following with the form:

  • The inverter type verification test sheet with the full schedule of the protection settings (a blank test sheet can be downloaded here). This should be provided by the manufacturer.
  • A copy of the final wiring circuit diagram
  • The wiring test certificate to ensure compliance with BS7671 (IEE Wiring Regulations)
  • Written confirmation that no other generating equipment is installed at this address that would take the total generation level to above 16A/phase.
