Installing your own electricity generation
With the introduction of feed-in tariffs, many people are considering installing their own electricity generation. For practical advice about installing microgeneration and connecting to our network, please download our guide to microgeneration. If you are looking for useful information about the incentives that are available and how to pursue this through your electricity supplier, please visit The Department of Energy and Climate Change’s website.
Connecting generating equipment
If you are considering installing or operating generating equipment, it is essential that you notify us of your plans as they may affect other customers’ electricity supplies require alterations to your connection. You should always use a recognised installer if you are planning to install generating equipment of any capacity.
The connection process varies with the size of generation equipment to be installed. We have been working with other electricity distribution companies to produce three generation connection guides to provide you with helpful information and a clear explanation regarding the connection application process. We have drawn up a simple decision tree to help you decide which guide best meets your requirements.
Guidance on making an application
To access the relevant guidance and information about how to make an application, please select the appropriate link below:
- Single installation up to 16 amps per phase – Connection in a single property connected at low voltage (230 Volts single phase or 400 volts three phase) of a single generating plant of up to 16 Amps per phase (3.68kW for a single phase installation, 11.04 kW for a three phase installation)
- Multiple installations of up to 16 amps per phase – Connection in multiple properties connected at low voltage of multiple generating plants where none of the plants are more than 16 Amps per phase each
- Over 16 amps per phase (G59/2-1) - Connection at low voltage of generating plant above 16 Amps per phase or any generating plant to be connected at any other voltage
