Welcome to our unmetered connections customer web page. If you represent a local authority or highways agency lighting department, a public lighting contracting organisation or an electrical street furniture provider, then we hope the guidance within this page will help you with your enquiry about the connection of an unmetered electricity supply. Please either download, complete and send a postal application form or fill and email an online application.

Unmetered Connections Services

Services available:

  • To offer quotations and manage orders for the provision of new unmetered supply connections.
  • To offer quotations and manage orders for the provision of connection transfers or disconnection of existing unmetered supplies.

Each of the services offered are chargeable and are provided under our obligations as the local Licensed Distribution Network Operator (DNO). These services are provided in a number of ways depending on how frequently you wish to call upon them and also the number of unmetered connections involved in each scheme

When is a metered supply connection more appropriate?

The Electricity (Unmetered) Supply Regulations 2001 describe the circumstances in which a supply of electricity may be unmetered. The following information has been taken from these regulations and is intended to provide you with some guidance regarding the circumstances where an unmetered supply may be appropriate. An unmetered supply may be given where the electrical load is of a predictable nature, and either:

a) the electrical load is less than 500W; or

b) it is not practical for a supply of electricity to be given through an appropriate meter at the premises due to:

i) the anticipated metering costs in the particular case being significantly higher than the usual metering costs associated with the size of the electrical load;

ii) technical difficulties associated with providing such a meter in the particular case; or

iii) operation of law so as to prohibit or make excessively difficult the provision of such matter in the particular case.

In addition an unmetered supply shall only be given where the authorised distributor, authorised supplier and the customer have agreed to such a supply.

The rules for unmetered connections are covered by The Electricity (Unmetered Supply) Regulations 2001 and you can also access our frequently asked questions for metered connections. Alternatively, you are welcome to contact us.
