BEET... helping our customers save energy

Boston Spa Energy Efficiency Trial (BEET) is a £1.3m energy efficiency trial to help households and businesses in and around Boston Spa and Wetherby, Yorkshire, to reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions. Using our bespoke BEET-Box, from August 2022 to April 2023 we’ll harness data from local smart meters to optimise the network voltage. Put simply, we will safely turn voltage up and down to help customers save energy

BEET could help each of the 15,000 households and businesses in the area cut their energy bills by an average of £20 annually and their carbon emissions by 27kg a year – the equivalent of driving 100km. Nationally, the technology could cut UK energy bills by up to £500m and save 200,000 to two million tonnes of CO2.

The benefits of BEET

BEET is part of our industry-leading innovation programme – preparing today for the zero carbon demands of tomorrow. Following a successful trial, we plan to roll out the technology to up to 80 per cent of our customers by 2033. If the technology is shared nationwide, it could save £500m from consumer energy bills and potentially cut between 200,000 and two million tonnes of CO2 from the UK annually.

Why smart meters are key to BEET

BEET uses smart meters to help us see what’s happening on the network in close to real time. Smart meters don’t tell us your personal data, just the voltage you are using. You don’t need to have one to enjoy BEET’s money and carbon-saving benefits – but the more smart meters that are installed in the trial area, the better data set we have to work with and the more successful the trial is likely to be.
