    Flexibility Services

    Flexibility Services

As the UK moves towards a net zero future, the way energy is generated, stored and consumed is changing. Flexibility Services can provide a smart and efficient way of managing the electricity network and facilitating the low carbon transition.

Flexibility Services

Net zero targets and changing consumer preferences are accelerating the drive towards decarbonisation. Alongside this, the uptake in low carbon technologies like heat pumps and electric vehicle (EV) charge points is creating increased demand for electricity to power people's homes, business and transport.

One of the ways we can facilitate the low carbon transition and meet the increased demand for electricity, is through the use of targeted Flexibility Services. This means that we will contract with flexibility service providers who can increase or decrease their energy consumption and/or generation at times requested by us.

As we move towards a Distribution System Operation (DSO) function, with more localised network management, the provision of targeted Flexibility Services will help us to manage peaks in demand and generation on our network and get the most out of our existing assets. It will enable a smarter and more efficient approach to network management by minimising the need for costly network reinforcement and the associated impact on customers bill and gives providers the opportunity to earn revenue by supporting the energy system.

What do we mean by Flexibility Services?

Flexibility Services means being able to change how much power is generated or consumed, in certain locations, when requested. We're looking to procure Flexibility Services from owners and operators of generation, storage and demand assets connected at specific locations across our network to help us manage the electricity network in a smarter, more efficient way.

Benefits

Flexibility Services will:

  • Reduce or mitigate the need for costly and time-consuming network reinforcement.
  • Support the uptake of low carbon technologies like EVs and heat pumps.
  • Enable providers who are able to be flexible with their energy consumption and/or generation to earn revenue and support the energy system.

Where we're looking for flexibility

With our Spring 2023 tender we've been seeking to procure flexibility at specific locations across our operating area of the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

For more information on the locations where we're looking to procure flexibility, current and upcoming tenders and how to get involved, visit the Flexible Power website.

Who can get involved?

We're looking to procure Flexibility Services from customers on our network who can increase or decrease their energy consumption and/or generation on request. This could include generators, major energy users like large factories and supermarkets, electricity storage operators and aggregators.

To provide us with Flexibility Services, your site must be located in areas of our network where we've identified a need for flexibility. The asset(s) must be controllable and non-intermittent so that the energy consumption and/or generation can be reliably turned up or down, in line with a schedule agreed with Northern Powergrid.

How to get involved

To participate in our flexibility tenders, you will need to:

  • Register your interest via our e-tendering system.
  • Access the opportunity titled 'Distribution Flexibility Services'.
  • Complete a supplier registration and Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ).
  • Parties who pass the PQQ will be notified of the locations where we're seeking to procure flexibility services and can choose whether to respond to our invitation to tender.

    Engagement

We're keen to talk to stakeholders who can provide us with flexibility services. We host regular events and can facilitate one-to-one discussions where you'll meet the team and we'll explain more about what's involved in providing flexibility to our network.

You can also sign up to join our mailing list and receive notifications when we have a new requirement, updates and invites to flexibility events. To register email flexibility@northernpowergrid.com.
