Heavy snowstorms and extreme weather conditions disrupted electricity supplies to over 5,000 properties in Shetland. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution worked to reconnect customers, but the severity of the weather and the extent of the network damage meant many customers were left without power for days.
The GB distribution network operators (DNOs) have a long history of supporting one another during major incidents under the industry’s mutual aid agreement (NEWSAC). In this instance, Northern Powergrid was able to send a specialist team of linesmen, engineers, and plant operators to help Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution’s restoration and repair efforts.
This group travelled to Perth, Scotland for an induction with SSEN before heading to Shetland to begin supporting the restoration effort. Despite the weather conditions causing travel disruptions that hampered progress, the team arrived and supported the restoration effort throughout the weekend.
We are proud of the dedication of our teams and contractors that go out into the harshest of conditions to support customers in our region and beyond. Thank you for your hard work and commitment every day and especially during major incidents – and a special thank you to the team who travelled to Shetland.
